Steve Kenny, of Slate Mills, challenged the idea that growth is inevitable and asked if there is nothing that can be done to stop it. It is not whether Rappahannock will grow, but how, McMahon said. He added even a little growth in the wrong places would suburbanize the county overnight. He identified three problems with growth: where you put it; how you arrange it and; what it will look like.
For example, the Chancellorsville church, a landmark of the Civil War, was once listed as one of the 10 most endangered landmarks in the country. Today it is preserved, however, an enormous parking lot and shopping mall surrounds it. He said the city planners now wish they had put the shopping 1,000 feet down the road.
