Once those types of places are identified as worth preserving, it is much easier to save them from development. A question that is important to Rappahannock County, and all of Virginia, is “What are you building today that is worth preserving tomorrow? What buildings built today will your children and grandchildren want to save in 50 years?” McMahon said a survey in Fauquier County showed that not one building built since World War II was considered worth preserving.
Four essentials for maintaining a rural character are: making sure farming is not just preserved, but that farming is economically viable as an industry; directing growth to existing towns; protecting historic environment and natural resources; and requiring new construction to be responsible to local character.
