Lee Trott and I conducted a Nature Week from a small inn on Pawleys Island in early May. Up until hurricane Hugo in 1989, the painted bunting was common on this small island. The storm removed much of the thick undergrowth preferred by the nonpariel; they are rare now but will return to sing and breed on the island as their preferred habitat is gradually restored by nature.
Our group of bird watchers saW the painted bunting at Huntington Beach State Park, just north of Pawleys Island. There the male sang from high in the bare branches of a dead tree. There were gasps and exclamations of “Wow!” and “I don’t believe it!” from members of our group who were seeing the little bird for the first time. Even those seeing the little bird for the second, third or even fourth time were excited.
