Safe food

for a crowd

BY CHRISTINE KASTAN

Extension Agent

By popular demand the Safe Food for Occasional Quantity Cooks is coming back to Culpeper. Non profit, church and community groups in Culpeper and surrounding areas have an opportunity to take this six hour course and receive a certificate of completion. The course is for people who prepare and serve food for a large group of people, maybe 25, 50, 100 or more. Those that prepare food for large events are often occasional quantity cooks. Occasional quantity cooks are volunteers not employed by a commercial food company and who prepare large quantities of food, some only once a year.

Unsafe food at a single banquet or street festival could ruin the reputation of the organization, put future groups in jeopardy and could create a legal risk.

The course also includes the local temporary permit process and what is required. Those that successfully complete the course will receive a certificate to post at your event and expedite the on site inspection process.

Educators from Virginia Cooperative Extension and Virginia Department of Health team teach the course. The six hour course is being offered in Culpeper on June 22 and 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Culpeper Extension Office. There is a $10 text fee. Call 6753619 for information.
