“The character of this county will change one building at a time until its sense of place is lost, unless the aesthetics of the growth are controlled,” McMahon said. He summarized similar steps that communities have used to become successful in retaining their sense of place.
First, they share a common vision for the future. “We spend far too much time fighting about what we disagree about and not nearly enough time identifying what we do agree about,” he said. The vision grows out of identifying the physical, natural and cultural resources. They build on those local assets. They lower regulations. “We need to think about using incentives, education, and voluntary participation to create the kind of community we want,” he said.
They meet the needs of property owners and the constituency. Successful communities cooperate with resource managers of public lands for mutual benefit. When the park and community work together on this vision they get a lot more done than if they fight each other. They work with non-governmental groups and encourage leaders to take the initiative. They value aesthetics.
