The main topic of discussion at the meeting of the Rappahannock School Board meeting, much like the board of supervisors’ meeting, was the bond issue. But, the school board discussed many other items as j,;ipell. They are as follows: FW • The consent agenda, consisting of the treasurJ er’s report, activity fund reports, field trips and fund raisers, was approved. There was some discussion on whether activities such as a cake raffle are allowable because a raffle involves a degree of gambling. Dr. David Gangel, superintendent, recommended the event be changed to a cake auction and that the policy be reviewed and changed if necessary.

• Mary Anne Biggs, assistant superintendent, discussed the opening of school and the success of the Light the Tbrch day at RCHS. The board agreed that the idea should be carried through in other activities during the school year.

• The board noted that it would like to hear from teachers, students and volunteers about ideas they think would help improve the schools or areas that - need to be addressed.

• Jenny Stanley reported that the seventh grade is planning three fund raisers to finance its annual field trip to Williamsburg. The board approved the fund raisers.

'• Donations of $50 for the preschool program and $300 from “Teaching Tolerance" magazine were received. The $300 donation is to be used for the art department since it was awarded as a result of murals created by students last year to illustrate conflict resolution.

• A donation of $6,360 was made by an anonymous donor who asked Headwaters to present it to the school board. Kathryn Treanor stressed to the board that Headwaters normally does not concern itself with athletic issues, preferring to gear its resources toward academic issues and needs, but was pleased to act as a pass through organization for the purpose of this specific donation.
