The sound of rushing air
last Oct. 12 was the collective sigh of relief from Virginia’s thoroughbred horsemen after Colonial Downs’ inaugural race meet was over.
Much maligned and fraught with controversy, Colonial had nonetheless survived the tough opening season and the New Kent County track looked on course to race into the future.
Though Colonial won the race to its opening, the track suffered a series of blows that have crippled it even as a second season began with much fanfare on Sept. 7. However, the premiere Secretariat turf course has attracted full fields on the flat during the opening week of Colonials’ current season, and that course could turn the track around.
