Circus coming to town
Roberts Brothers 3-Ring Circus is coming to Washington Volunteer Fire Department grounds on Sept. 22. Show time is 7 p.m., circus midway opens at 6 p.m. Prices are adults $8 and a child without coupon $5.
Auction at Amissville

Benefit car wash scheduled
The Rappahannock County High School choirs will be having a car wash at the 211 Quicke Mart on Saturday, Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Flexercise classes to begin
A six week series of flexercise classes will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 5:30 p.m. Classes will be Tuesday and Thursday at the Washington School on Mt. Salem Avenue. Fee is $35. Call Rose Ann Sharp at 675-3887.
Activities at Castleton
The Castleton Community Volunteer Fire Company is currently sponsoring bingo every Saturday night and a shooting match every Friday night. The bingo doors open at 6 p.m., early birds start at 6:45 p.m. There will be early birds, treasure chest, instant bingo, jackpot and good food. The shooting match starts at 7 p.m., with great prizes. Rules are no sleeves, no scopes, no barrels over 36 inches and 12 gauge shot guns only. Food will be served.
Beekeepers to meet
The Northern Piedmont Beekeepers Association will hold its September meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17 at the Culpeper Cooperative Extension Service building at the corner of Davis Street and South West Street, Culpeper. John Trott to speak
The Fauquier Outdoor Lab will feature a slide-lecture by local “naturalist wonder,” John Trott on Monday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. The festivities and open house will begin at 6 p.m. Mr. Trott will speak on “The Nature of Birds” which will focus on local birds and wildflowers. There will be refreshments, short nature walks, insect displays and a chance to see pond creatures up-close and personal, both under microscopes and in your hand.
Karate classes underway
Shorin-Ryu Okinawan Karate classes are currently underway at Ki Theatre in Washington. Classes will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for juniors and from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for adults. Asparagus Production to be discussed
“Raising Asparagus for Home Garden or Commercial Production” will be the main topic of an educational farm tour open to the public at the farm of Richard and Joyce Abell on Saturday afternoon. Sept. 19. The afternoon will begin with a discussion from 1 to 2 p.m., about how to use raised beds and row covers in the vegetable garden. Then, between 2 and 3 p.m. the tour will concentrate on asparagus production, including methods of pest and weed control. Between 3 and 4 p.m. the tour will be devoted to the problems and rewards of small fruits, such as blackberries, raspberries. persimmons, apples and pears. The Abells have a small farm which abides by the Ecological Production Pledge of the Virginia Association for Biological Farming, sponsor of the tour.
