Labor Day is usually a day for fun and the celebration of summer’s end. No exception, 15-year-old Wally Reid of Sperryville was having a great time enjoying himself while four-wheeling on his grandfather’s farm in Sperryville until a freak accident occurred.
Reid was riding in the field behind his grandfather’s house, across from the U.S. 522/Route 231 intersection, when he hit a culvert. The four-wheeler flew out from under him, flipped in the air and came down to land on his chest. He suffered broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a broken left shoulder, head trauma, a lacerated liver and injuries to his right leg, said Debbie Fantaci, of the Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad which responded to the incident. The Washington Volunteer Fire Department also responded.
Reid was rushed by ambulance to the Amissville fire department where he was airlifted by INOVA to Fauquier Hospital. He underwent surgery most of that night, said Fantaci.
