More influential in shaping equine harness were rigs used on cattle, reindeer and donkeys, all of which were domesticated long before the horse. Archaeological evidence places reindeer, for instance, pulling sledges in northern Europe around 5000 BC. Cattle appear to have been domesticated by Neolithic man prior to 4000 BC.
