The Rappahannock County School Board and subsequently
the Board of Supervisors passed a resolution
last week to “finance the acquisition, construction, reconstruction, renovation, expansion and equipping of public school facilities in the county including, but not limited to, additions to the Rappahannock County High School ...” This resolution also say that the school board wishes to “effectuate the sale of up to $3,000,000 in local school bonds of the county to the Virginia Public School Authority ...”
What that translates to, as far as citizens are concerned, is no bond referendum. Having passed the resolution, the board of supervisors will hold a public hearing on the matter on Oct. 5 (their regular meeting date) at 7 p.m. and, depending what they hear from the public, either authorize an application to the VPSA for the purchase of the bonds or not. If they do not authorize the purchase the school board may then request a referendum on the issue.
The supervisors are urging the public to respond on this matter. They want input — call them, write them or show up on Oct. 5.
Headwaters is hosting a community forum on Sept. 29 to answer questions citizens may have about the expansion at the high school. It will start at 5:30 p.m. and will be held at the high school. The forum will include tours of the site proposed for the new athletic fields. This is a good opportunity for people to get answers to any questions they may have and become better informed on the matter before the public hearing on Oct. 5.
So far, it seems most people agree that some sort of school expansion is required. The issue is how much. There have been some objections raised at meetings concerning the costs of the athletic fields — $40,000 at the high school to relocate the softball field, and a total of $299,000 at the new site (a little ways behind the elementary school) to construct softball and baseball fields and a parking area. Whether you are in favor of the expansion, have unanswered questions about it or are against it your opinion will not count unless you make it known.
