racing last year; if entries on opening day were any indication, horsemen are indeed embracing the expanded turf schedule as track owners hoped.

In addition to turf racing on the flat, Colonial has carded a full schedule of up to 10 steeplechase races. The turf course is 180 feet wide, with 10 racing lanes available for use with a movable inside rail that allows racing across the fragile turf. Any sporting fan that has seen what a golf club can do to a putting green knows well the damage done by a dozen horses racing full flight across a turf oval. The movable rail makes for a variety of courses at differing distances that keep the inside of each course fresh.
