Trott’s column on the Tree-ofHeaven, Ailanthus altissima. I confess I share his aversion to these plants (and some other weeds as well), but it turns out this plant makes a number of potentially valuable chemicals, one of which (ailanthone) is apparently as effective an herbicide as the active ingredient in the commercial herbicide
