British. She had been built with wood from the live oak trees from Georgia, an extremely hard wood, and broadsides from the British ship bounced off her sides. When the ship was due to the be scrapped, a poem of Oliver Wendell Holmes stirred up the populace enough so it was moved to the Boston Navy Yard and repaired. It is still there, open to visitors, and is the oldest commissioned Navy ship.
The budget for the year, presented by the Treasurer, Mrs. Edgar F. Puryear Jr. was approved.
On Sept. 26, Woodville is due to celebrate its bicentennial with a parade and festivities. The chapter will take part in some of the activities.
From May to October 1999, Culpeper County will celebrate its 250th anniversary with many events during that period and, again the chapter will participate.
The next meeting will be a luncheon meeting at the Public School House in Flint Hill, starting at 11 a.m. on Oct. 13. The speaker will be Mrs. H.T.N. Graves.
