“Benchley Despite Himself," the one man play written and performed by Nat Benchley, traces the inimitable career, the humor and the personality of the actor’s famous grandfather, Robert Benchley. It comes to The Theatre at Washington, Va. on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. for a single performance.
Robert • Benchley, while writing for The New Yorker and for Life magazine in the 1920s, was a member of the legendary Algonquin Round Table. Douglas Fairbanks Jr., who had lived at the Algonquin Hotel as a teen-ager, told grandson Nat that he came to know “Bob” Benchley back then as one of the “famous ‘roundtable’ of wits, authors and critics who lunched almost daily.”
Referring to Benchley Despite Himself, Fairbanks noted that “his grandson has succeeded in giving the present generation a delightfully witty and sly impression of the ‘Great Bob B’.”
