business? Do I want to make enough to retire? I will probably never retire, I am not the type.
We actually received 85 signatures on our initial petition. 30 listed their home as Sperryville, 22 in Washington, Va, nine in Flint Hill, four in Woodville, three in Amissville, one in Castleton, five in Culpeper, four from various Virginia addresses and four are out of state (all of these people count ancestors from Major’s Hollow).
We have always considered ourselves good neighbors, helping with plumbing, pets, children, auto repair and physical therapy. I realize that we may not be a conventional family, but we put our hearts on the line to adopt three learning disabled children. We have found wonderful friends in Rappahannock and we walk our talk the best we know how.
There is one point that Mrs. Adolfi made that has merit. I did say in the meeting that I “had offered” her a covenant to access the pond site, when I should have said that I “am offering” her a covenant. I called her on the phone leaving a detailed message and an apology, when my public letter of apology did not get to the paper on time.
There was a time that our land hosted dances and parties for the black community of Major’s Hollow. Mr. Russell has pointed out the site that once was a pavilion for square dances. This land has a history of being a social gathering place. It does not lend itself to agricultural development. We feel very supported by the local people and look forward to memorializing the history of the land.
Whether Mrs. Adolfi likes it or not we are her neighbors, and we are not going away.
