Charles Browning Swaim, a ninth grade student at RandolphMacon academy in Front Royal, was awarded the Scholarship Medal by Academy president Col. Arvin S. Williams during recent commencement weekend activities. The honor annually goes to the top-ranked cadet based on year-long academic averages, and Swaim’s 4.0 was the school’s top figure. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.B. Swaim of Route 647, Flint Hill. The Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District sponsored a poster and essay contest in the spring with five counties competing. Frances Gray of Washington placed first in the essay division in district competition and placed second in area competition which included 17 other counties. Alvin Atkins is retiring from the position of maintenance supervisor and custodian of Rappahannock County High School, a post which he has held at this facility since its construction 14 years ago.
