Charley F. Baldwin of Slate Mills celebrated his 70th birthday on June 8, with a small party given on June 5. Born in 1929 on Pickerel Ridge in that section of the Blue Ridge in Rappahannock County which became part of the Shenandoah National Park.
Mr. Baldwin’s parents were the late Oscar Edward and Sarah “Lizzie” Molden Baldwin. Charley, one of six siblings, viz: Clarence E., Lena E., George B., and Aubrey L., and an infant brother stillborn, all now deceased.
The circumstances of his birth are remarkable. A day or so before Charley was born, his parents were fixing fence, when the sledge hammer his father was using broke off the handle and hit his mother in the stomach. When he was born, Charley not only had a broken nose, but the whole right side of his face was bloody and bruised. The recovery took some few months, with doubts that he would survive. This incredible accident, the cause of the malformation of his teeth, lent to Charley getting the nickname of “Buck”.
Charley’s education is limited. Attending Sycamore School in Old Hollow then on to Sperryville. Passing to high school and quitting in the eighth grade. His higher education came from that old school....common sense.
