People are urged to use' common sense when guarding financial transactions. Anyone contacted by phone or mail and told that their bank account or credit card may be vulnerable to Y2K problems should question the validity of such a call. Never give your credit card or checking account number to anyone over the phone, and always ask for details in writing.

The Federal Trade. Commission toll-free con-, sumer hotline, 1-888-USA4Y2K. They have recorded information 24 hours a day, but between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. callers may speak with an FTC representative.
The Council on Management Information. They initially addressed the Year 2000 problem in 1995. Their web site, www.cdcl.state.va.us, can tell you about some efforts underway to bring Virginia state, * agencies into compliance.
The Federal Financial Institutions’ Examination Council can give you guidelines for examining financial institutions. They can be accessed via the web at www.ffiec.gov.
