Jackson District
One of the two contested Supervisor’s races is in Jackson District, as challenger Jack Atkins attempts to unseat incumbent Board member. Ron Frazier.
Both men attended the education forum. A third candidate, Donald Brown, did not attend.
• Ron Frazier talked about getting more money from the state for Rappahannock County schools, and not expanding programs like arts and athletics with the school system’s current limited funds.
Frazier also stood up for the sometimesunpopular state-mandated Standards Of Learning.
“The SOL’s should not be seen as an unfunded mandate,” Frazier said. “I can’t see why knowing what century Abraham Lincoln was elected president is an unfunded mandate. Over the years too many touchy-feely things have entered the curriculum.”
Jack Atkins promised to go over the school budget line by line, and talked about returning home economics to the schools. On funding issues, he discussed trying to get lottery profits from the state, and possibly enacting a county alcohol and tobacco tax to pay for education expenses.
Atkins also sounded an optimistic note, saying that his two daughters graduated from Rappahannock County schools and went on to college.
“This tells me that Rappahannock graduates can succeed,” he said.
