By exploiting the habit of members of an ant colony to attack any foreign object introduced into their underground city, the flicker can easily scoop large numbers of ants into his mouth.
The flicker waddles across the ground on his short woodpecker legs until he discovers an ant nest. He pokes his long sticky tongue deep into the nest, ants attack, and the flicker withdraws his long tongue and swallows a whole mouthful of ants, formic acid and all.
