My husband, who was working under the SAG contract, went through the crew/SAG lunch line, with a great selection of salads and meat/foul/fish choices, then would bring his tray out to sit with me.

Our food selection was much more limited. Another difference between the SAG extras and the “ordinary” extras was pay: My husband’s pay was $13 an hour, time-and-half after eight hours, double time after ten. I was paid a straight $5.15 an hour.”

Was it worth taking time from Faith Mountain Store to be a featured extra in a movie?

“I had a wonderful time. Martin was right: It was a once-in-a-life-time experience. Everyone was very nice to me. Extras are not allowed to speak to the principals (stars) unless spoken to. Miss Allen was very pleasant to me on the set and spoke to me occasionally. She is a fine actress. Time and time again she would repeat her lines flawlessly, after someone else had flubbed theirs.”

Would she take time away from the Faith Mountain Store again to be a movie extra? “Perhaps, but next time I would want to work under the SAG contract and at least make expenses. My short peek at the movie business was fun, but I’m glad to be back at my job at Faith Mountain,” she added.

The Contender stars Jeff Bridges, Christian Slater, Joan Allen, Gary Oldman and Sam Elliott and is written and directed by Rod Lurie. Release is scheduled for fall, 2000.
