years later, Guido has his own bookshop, a delightful house, and a wonderful son, Giosue. As Jews, Guido and Giosue are rounded up when the Nazis arrive and are sent to a concentration camp. Dora boards the train of captives to be with her family. At this point Guido invents an elaborate game to keep alive his little boy’s innocence and we watch as Guido’s ambitious fable unfolds.
The boy is thus shielded from the horrors of the camp, showing comedy’s redemptive power. “Life is Beautiful” won three Academy Awards for Best Actor, Best Foreign Film and Best Musical Score and has now received over forty international awards. (PG-13, 100 minutes)
