Deer safety tips Peak deer-accident season is
nearly upon us. ’irginia’s deer population is nearly 950,000 and with hunting season, and deer mating season, ▼ approaching, the likelihood of hitting a deer with your car is reaching its peak. The Commonwealth of Virginia has the country’s twelfth highest white-tailed deer populations. Many of these deer dwell in suburban areas undergoing residential development. Thus, people and deer meetings are greater than ever. Not all animal-vehicle collisions can be avoided, but the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries offers the following tips: If you see one deer, stay alert for more. Deer travel in herds. Avoid swerving in your attempt to avoid the animal. You might lose control of the wheel, causing you to either hit another car or go into a ditch or tree. Stay in your lane and hit the brake. Most collisions occur by a frightened deer hitting the side of the car, not by the car meeting the deer head-on.
