SPERRYVILLE — Training her three-day event horses in rural Indiana, Joanne Gelarden said that she used to pounce on the Chronicle of the Horse magazine when it arrived each week, poring over reports of steeplechases and imagining how brave those horses and their bold riders must be.
She was particularly interested when fellow eventer Julie Gomena took up the racing reins in 1996, adding ladies’ timber and flat race victories to her many wins at the upper reaches of the international event world.
