gathering place for the Romans. The barbers work included massaging, manicuring. hair cutting, and the application of rare ointment and cosmetics. Barbers were so highly prized that a statue was erected to the memory of the first barber of Rome.
When Hadrian was Emperor he let his beard grow because of scares on his face. The Roman people imitated him and grew beards whether they needed them or not. The leaders of the state led the fashion and it changed many times according to the prevailing style.
At the end of the 12th Century the barbers were prohibited from practicing medicine, surgery and dentistry. Most of the diseases which are easily curable now, were fatal then. This was the first step in the upward progress of the barber profession.
In 1893 a school for barbers was established by A.B. Mobe of Chicago. This was the first institution of its kind in the world and was very successful. It was followed by other schools through out the United States. It was not until about 1920 that much effort was made to professionalize the work.
We have had good barbers in our county.
