OK campers! Make sure you save time in your summer plans for the Fifteenth Rappahannock Nature Camp!
As in the past eight years, the camp’s home base will be at Singing Creek, along the Hazel River, two miles west of Route 231. There is a pole barn that serves as shelter for the camp.
Other attractions include a frog pond, gardens, hiking trails, proximity to the Shenandoah National Park, a shallow “swimming hole” which the campers construct in the river, and lots of ant lions!
Last year’s campers demanded that we have a second session so older campers could return. This year we will do that! Note the dates: Session I (age 8-12) July 1 - July 12 and Session II (age 12 - 15) July 15 - July 19.
Our camp is one of seven similar . camps initiated by the Piedmont Environmental Council in northern and central Virginia. The Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection is our local co-sponsor.
Goals of the camp are: to awaken an interest in our wonderfully beautiful and diverse natural surroundings; to observe living plants and animals in their natural environment; to understand the role of human beings in this shared environment; and to have fun and make new discoveries every day.
Daily activities this year will focus on insects, snakes, amphibians, trees, gardens, birds and water life. This year’s theme for study is “Habitats.”
