Breakfast is the key to a good start every morning. Children, because they grow, change and learn so fast, especially need a nutritional boost every morning.
Studies since the early 1970’s have proven that nutrition affects learning in children. Besides nutritional status, breakfast benefits attendance, learning and achievement and behavior at school.
In 1998, 7.2 million children in more than 70,000 schools started their day with the School Breakfast Program.
Over the past 10 years the number of low-income children served by the School Breakfast Program grew by 94 percent. In the 1998 school year, 73.4 percent of the schools that offered school lunch also participated in the School Breakfast Program.
A reimbursable School Breakfast meal must contain: one serving (8 ounces) of milk; one serving 172 cup of fruit, vegetable, or full strength juice; and two servings of either bread/bread alternate or meat/meat cheese alternate (1
