Spring sports were in the air and one wrestler had a day to remember.
The track, ball fields, and soccer fields were full this past week with new teams preparing for spring competition. Every where one went this past week there were balls flying, runners racing and jumping, and shot puts being hurled. Meanwhile, down at the Civic Center in Salem, Va., our lone wrestling state tournament qualifier grappled his way to a school first:
Baseball
Baseball got a blast of cold air and a shot in the arm when they played a first week scrimmage at Blue Ridge Academy in Dyke, Va. on Thursday, Feb. 28. Head Coach Mick Strand and his JV Coach Sandy Neuman took all 31 boys associated with the RCHS 2002 Baseball Program, to Dyke in nearfreezing temperatures for an early-bird contest. Every boy got in somewhere in the seven-inning game and the Panthers came out on top 18 to 8.
Seven pitchers got to throw with seniors Chris Brown and Jamie Keys each pitching a scoreless inning. The slender young lefthander, eighth-grader Jason Jenkins also threw an inning in the varsity scrimmage. The Rapp squad offense garnered eleven hits with junior Daryl Cropp collecting two doubles and senior Zach Ashby hitting a triple.
