football team with only 89 students in , the entire high school. Rappahannock County doesn't have football, said Director Smythe, simply because it was never started.
The lack of football here leaves a large hole in fall sports. Spring sports programs brought out 89 boys last year for baseball, soccer, and track, but the only fall sport-cross country-attracted only 12 boys, leaving a large group of student-athletes unfulfilled and with little to do.
Football is an essential element in the growth and maturation of those who participate.
Athletic Director Smythe said that it teaches leadership, discipline, self-respect and respect for teammates. And too it is a community sport- Friday night and Saturday high school football games are the center for community activity in some towns and counties, and football creates, in many communities, the cohesiveness and pride that sustain them.
