plan for
Sperryville

At the Sperryville Gateway meeting on October 17, Gateway Committee Chair Tom Junk revealed a new sidewalk and road drainage approach that may eliminate some local and vocal opposition to the plan.
He said that VDOT Resident Engineer Bob Moore took into account some of the comments made at the Gateway meeting of September 19, and redesigned the Main Street cross-section by moving the road drains to the center of the right-of-way.
That change will eliminate the drainage gratings from the walkway swale on the south side of the street, and will make pedestrian passage easier.
Armed with photographs of Gay Street in Washington, committee member Martin Woodard suggested that the additional step of raising the walkway above grade be taken as well, as was done in Washington.
He said that if VDOT could not find the funds to make the additional improvements, then perhaps the Gateway Committee could.
The committee and the few members of the public in attendance were generally supportive of Mr. Moore’s proposed changes and Mr. Woodard’s additional proposed change. The committee is seeking to meet with Mr. Moore to discuss these changes and any implications on project finances and schedule.
They will report to the public at their next meeting.
