“Close to Home” is an exhibition of oil and watercolor paintings by Rappahannock artist Barbara Sherwood that will delight both the casual viewer and the professional painter alike. Here is an artist who truly relishes transcribing the beauty she sees everywhere around her. Lush colors, interesting patterns, and soothing passages of tone are masterfully combined in ways that invite us to linger, investigate, and enjoy each work.
The 22 paintings might be divided roughly into three groups: large landscapes in oil painted with a brush, small landscapes and still lifes mostly created using a palette knife, and watercolor paintings of interiors and still lifes. These varying approaches allow Ms. Sherwood to stretch her legs, as it were, and demonstrate the full breadth of her skills.
