Civil War Round Table
The Blue Ridge Round Table, which holds its monthly meetings in Sperryville, is sponsoring a special Civil War bus tour on Saturday, Oct. 26.
This year’s bus trip, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is to sites of Civil War history in Rappahannock and Warren Counties.
The first half of the tour will be hosted by the President of the round table, Art Candenquist.
This half of the tour will focus on engagements, encampments, and marches in Rappahannock County including the skirmish at Battle Mountain, in which General George A. Custer attacked A. P. Hill’s Corps of Lee’s retreating Confederate army as it approached Culpeper to regroup after Gettysburg.
This nearly fatal skirmish for Custer features similar strategy that will lead to his death at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876—splitting his cavalry forces repeatedly in the face of superior force and impetuously charging into the teeth of disaster.
