Return to combat
At the outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950, then-Maj. Lyle was assigned as the military assistant at the White House. Although itching to join the battle, he had to wait until he finished his stateside tour.
In late 1951, he received his assignment to Suwon Air Base, south of Seoul, Korea, as a deputy wing commander. There, he and his men flew the North American F-86 Sabre.
Lyle spent the next 12 months flying missions providing fighter cover for B-29 bombers, F-84 fighterbombers and unarmed Navyreconnaissance planes.
The Soviet-built MiG-15 was faster and more maneuverable than the F-80 and F84, and marginally better than the F-86 in a dogfight. But the Russian-trained Chinese and North Korean pilots were not as experienced in combat flying. This gave Americans flyers the advantage they needed.
