Corps and subsequently served as a radar navigator on a B-29 Superfortress with the Sixth Bomb Group, 313th Wing, 20th Air Force.
He flew 23 combat missions against the Japanese Empire and after the Japanese surrender, he continued flying missions, dropping supplies to Allied prisoners of war.
For his service, he was awarded numerous campaign decorations, including the Air Medal with five oak leaf clusters, as well as the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was commissioned a First Lieutenant in the Air Force Reserve during the Korean War.
Upon his return from World War II, he graduated from T. C. Williams School of Law and was admitted to practice before the Virginia Supreme Court in October, 1949.
