It is with palette knife in hand that Ms. Sherwood’s artistic mastery really shines. These small still lifes and landscapes are amazing. When looking at these I get the sense that artist, subject, and medium are all working seamlessly together yet reveling in their own individual identities. In the end these paintings become objects in and of themselves. One plus one plus one equals 10. The paint is applied thickly and with minimal mixing allowing for a luxurious, jewel-like surface texture. The colors are pure, rich, and saturated and I’m tempted to say that they surpass the real thing.
The subjects, whether a hilltop, pears, or cherries in a colander, have the presence of royalty — proud to be who they are. Again it is easy to picture the artist applying paint to these small panels. The trails and marks left by her palette knife are carefree and joyous.
For me the star of the show is “The Green Path”. Again using a palette knife Ms. Sherwood has chosen to show us a simple path through a wooded hillside. Yet this unpretentious scene becomes a feast for all the senses in the artist’s hands. She magically manages to convey not only the time of
