the Axelrod and Smithson quartets, and the Castle Trio, and conducts the Santa Fe (NM) Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra. He has been a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the National Symphony and the Cleveland Orchestra.
Recently, he has been devoting increasing amounts of time to conducting oratorio, opera, and the orchestral repertoire. His extensive discography, spanning composers from Monteverdi and Bach to Schonberg and Richard Strauss, includes more than fifty recordings — many of the international prize winners — featuring him as cellist, conductor, violist da gamba, and keyboard continuo player. For this concert, Kenneth Slowik will play a rare early eighteenth century bass viol made in Paris by Jean-Nicolas Lambert ca. 1710.
The remaining concerts in the current season of the Smithsonian at Little Washington will take place in the new year: on Feb. 15 the Castle Trio will play music of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven (the “Archduke” trio*; and on March 1 the beautiful soprano Amanda Balestrieri and a consort of viols will perform rarely-heard seventeenth century English chamber music from the time of Elizabeth I through Charles II.
