When London found itself with little available space for burying its dead during the mid 19th century, “Gardens of the Dead" were planned in the outlying suburbs. They provided walled off fields, catacombs and chapels, and planted trees. These exclusive resting places not only provided areas of interment for the dead, but they were places of instruction for the living. The mood as one of quiet contemplation and respect. Within their walls, Victorians could wander and ponder the hereafter. And they did so by the thousands, as the burial of famous people could draw crowds of 50,000 or more. These new fashionable cemeteries soon blossomed around every major British city, and were considered one of the great successes of their age.
