First Sgt. Ed Murphy, who leads Division II, Area 12 of the Virginia State Police, knows his job is dangerous. But there is one line of work he would never take on.
“You could not pay me enough to stand on the side of the highway with a jackhammer," Murphy said. “Work zones are ten times more dangerous than our jobs.”
Murphy isn't just speaking of the major highways. He says the small town zones and back roads like the ones in Rappahannock are also a potential hazard.
“Drivers have to be careful whenever they see the cones and flagmen,” Murphysaid. “Especially in town or in rural areas. People come up so fast on a zone, there isn't a lot of time to react.
