And 2003 promises to be even better as more landowners become aware of the value of putting their land under conservation easements. Interestingly, the spring and autumn landscapes seem to generate easement gifts.

Permanent landscape protection has become a major land use objective of private owners, and the amount of land so dedicated may in 2002 have achieved “critical mass” in Rappahannock.

Supporting this possibility is growing landowner awareness that donating easements on property already taxed under the “land use” system increases state aid to the county’s schools (for arcane reasons).
