Murphy and Rogers say the incidents can be as small as someone throwing food or batteries at highway workers as ihey go by, to clipping a worker, or actually the inability to stop in time as a work zone comes up.
"People are flying by these zones at upwards of 70 miles and hours," Rogers said. “You can’t react if you are a worker, and you can't stop if you are a driver."
Trooper injured
But highway workers are not the only people that are in the line of fire, Murphy said, routine traffic stops involving law enforcement are also dangerous as one of Murphy’s own found out in February.
