The Virginia Department of Transportation and the Virginia Road and Transportation Builders Association will be sponsoring Work Zone Safety Week, April 6-12 this year. In 2002, seven lives were lost and more than 327 people were injured in work zone related accidents. ■ Legislation was just passed doubling fines in work zones from $250 to $500 starting July 2003. Below are a few safety tips for drivers. • Stay alert. Expect anything to occur when entering a work zone. • Pay close attention. Signs and traffic control devices give positive guidance. • Don’t tailgate. Unexpected stops frequently occur in work zones. • Don’t speed. Note the posted speed limits in and around the work zone.
