Overweight and obesity have reached epidemic proportions in Virginia and the nation, according to the Virginia Department of Health.
In 2001, 57 percent of adult Virginians were overweight or obese, up from 40 percent in 1991. A 2000 sampling of fourth graders in 15 Virginia schools revealed that 17 percent were overweight. In 1997, a sampling of 10 schools revealed that 15 percent were overweight.
According to the US. Department of Health and Human Services, two-thirds of all American adults suffer from overweight and obesity. Another nine million children are overweight.
Public health officials across the U.S. are using Public Health Week, April 713, to call attention to the prevalence of overweight and obesity and their harmful health effects. The theme of this year's observance is "Getting in Shape for the Future: Healthy Eating and Active
