While living in Reston, I was often driven awake in the middle of the night by a horrible combination of a scream and a croak, coming from along the creek near my house.
When I first heard this noise, I thought something was being killed back there. However, it seemed to happen on a more-or-less regular schedule, so I finally asked a local naturalist what he thought it was. He confidently told me I was hearing a Great Blue Heron going through a normal predawn ritual.
