The narcotics team began watching the residence, following the Warren County mam, who was am acquaintamce of Kratz’s, Chester Gap, where Kratz and his wife, Melissa, 30, were living.

The surveillance resulted in that acquaintance of the Kratz family working with authorities, wearing a wire to secure information about Kratz’s illicit drug operation from his Chester Gap residence.

After substantial evidence was gathered by the Warren County Narcotics team and the Virginia State Police, an arrest was made on March 8, 2001.

Kratz was indicted by a Rappahannock County Grand Jury indictment on March 14, 2001 on six charges: conspiring to manufacture marijuana, manufacturing marijuana with intent to distribute, transport heroin into the Commonwealth of Virginia with intent to sell or distribute, sell, distribute or possess with intent to sell heroin, possession of heroin and possession of heroin with intent to sell and/or possess a firearm.
