Janice Recker is retiring and saying goodbye to the Rappahannock County Department of Social Services after 27 years of work.
A former resident of Washington, Recker lived in the town for 20 years and has served on the town council.
The Department of Social Services has changed a lot over the years, and Recker has witnessed many of the changes.
“We didn’t even have computers when I started as an office assistant,” she said. Recker now deals mainly with Benefit Programs, Food Stamps, and fraud, but remarked, “most of us wind up doing a little of everything.”
Recker started working at the department because she had young children, and found the office to be very “family friendly.” She was able to walk to work, and could leave in the afternoon to check on her children if they were ever sick.
Parts of the job have been very rewarding for -Rgcker. She almost grew teary-eyed as she talked of her experiences. f
“I can’t tell you how thrilling it is to have clients come to tell me they went back to school and got their GED, or how their life has turned around, she said.
