manufacturer in Richmond, VA made this saber for the State Arsenal in 1808. The belt displayed with the saber was made by the prisoners at the state penitentiary.
In time of war the state arsenal would issue weapons to those going off to defend the State. This particular saber was presented to Capt. Philip Slaughter of the 4th. Virginia Calvary. He carried it throughout the War. At the end of wartime hostilities weapons were supposed to be returned to the arsenal, however, many were not returned. This particular saber was found boarded up in a staircase at “Clover Hill”. “Clover Hill” located
