Certificates were given to each member in recognition of their dedication. Coffee and cake were provided by the High School and Elementary school as a way to show their appreciation of the board.
Public comment
Two people were present to speak in the session for public comment.
Kilby Thornton of Stonewall/Hawthome District came to inform the board about the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competitions.
In the FIRST program, children build robots to compete in local and regional competitions.
Thornton said he “hoped to be part of the mentoring aspect of it,” and said that FIRST can be a community based event in which parents and students work together, learning about robotics.
While it costs about $6,000 to participate in the competitions, Thornton said that he had several ideas about how the money can come from the community. “I want to see it become as popular as sports in the county,” said Thornton.
Next to speak was Katherine Trainer of Jackson District, who spoke in favor of the curriculum enrichment programs.
She told about a field trip one of her sons took to the Chesapeake Bay to learn about marine hfe, and how valuable it was to him. “I hope the board will increase funding for curricular enrichment,” said Trainer in her closing remarks.
