ACCORDING TO CUSTOM
Funeral customs may have evolved over time, but their primary purpose remains unchanged. They are intended to provide comfort to the living and respect for the dead. Modern mourning clothing came from the custom of wearing special clothing as a disguise to ' ide identity from returning spirits. Ancient civilizations once believed that returning spirits would fail to recognize them in the new attire, and would be confused and overlook them. The custom of holding wakes is derived from the ancient custom of maintaining a watch over the deceased in the hope that life would return. Most customs have their basis in ancient beliefs, which may no logger be held; however, the customs remain to help us through the transition.
