The eighth grader persevered with the experiment for about a month, testing more seeds using lemon juice and copper dust.
Burnett got the idea for his project last year when he went to regionals as a participant.
“I saw that there was only one project in the math category, and since I love math, I decided to do this,” Burnett said. He found the idea for the project on the University of Illinois Web site.
Burnett also received a $100 savings bond from Rappahannock National Bank.
Receiving a $50 savings bond as the junior division second place winner was Megan Wheatley for her ‘Temperature and Tuning: Always B Natural” project.
